CASE STUDY: Leading, Evolving, and Optimizing Share Our Strength's Development Operations

Org Design and Restructure for Fundraising Technology & Operations Team, Workflow Optimization, Embedded Fractional Managing Director (2022)

Justin served in a six-month embedded consulting role with Share Our Strength (SOS), leading and transforming the DonorOps functions into a highly strategic team of fundraising technology and operations experts. Accomplishments included leading the Org Development & Design to evolve the team from its former structure to a specialized operational engine comprising Fundraising Product & Technology, Analytics, User Training & Support, Donor Services, and Revenue Operations. Justin also provided advisory support to SOS’s Chief Revenue Officer and Development leadership on the strategic deployment of the Fundraising Tech & Ops resources.

Share Our Strength and their flagship childhood hunger campaign, No Kid Hungry, experienced a significant upswell in financial support during the pandemic and, as a result, began investing more heavily in the growth and diversification of its fundraising and marketing programs. SOS experienced sudden and dramatic staff turnover in its Donor Operations team, which housed its donor database, donor services, and gift processing & administration teams. SOS decided to engage a consultant who would both provide interim leadership for the DonorOps team and work with SOS to refactor and optimize the team’s structure and remit to align with the organization’s future growth trajectory.

Justin helped transform the team’s day-to-day work, including mentoring existing staff; stabilizing the team’s capacity through tactical prioritization, automation, delegation, and outsourcing; selecting and onboarding multiple key vendor resources; and implementing new cross-departmental workflows and matrixed technology management that reduced silos and facilitated integration between teams in fundraising, marketing, and IT.
